FREEHOLD - The League of Women Voters announced this afternoon that the scheduled debate between incumbent State Senator Vin Gopal and GOP hopeful Lorri Annetta has been cancelled.
In a letter sent out to all those who registered for the debate, the Forum organizer wrote:
The League of Women Voters of Monmouth County (LWV) and NJ Religious Action Committee of Reform Judaism (RAC-NJ) regretfully announce that the Candidates' Virtual Forum for State Legislative District 11 will not take place tonight as scheduled. Yesterday we received notice from the Republican campaign that “Due to a scheduling conflict, Lori Annetta, will be unable to participate in tomorrow evening's LD11 forum.” As LWV policy prohibits us from holding an “Empty Chair” forum, we informed Senator Vin Gopal that we could not include him in the event.
The Democrat campaign subsequently issued the following statement on behalf of Senator Vin Gopal, Assembly person Eric Houghtaling and Assembly person Joann Downey, "We were looking forward to having a constructive exchange of ideas with our Republican opponents at the League of Women Voters forum. However, our opponents have chosen to not make themselves available to address the voters of the 11th Legislative District. We find it unfortunate that the event, as scheduled, can no longer occur…” LWV then had to inform Dominique Faison, the Green Party candidate for Assembly, that the forum was cancelled. The League of Women Voters of Monmouth County would like to thank our sponsor, RAC-NJ, and all our volunteers who worked very hard in preparation for this forum. We too are very disappointed that District 11 constituents will not be able to benefit from the information that the forum would have generated in aiding them in their voting decisions.
