Veterans Day ... Veterans Month!

MANALAPAN – The Monmouth County Library is presenting a unique, educational and highly entertaining tribute to Veterans Day throughout the month of November with a daily presentation of the Florian Schantz Jazz Combo virtually on the library’s webpage at

The Florian Schantz Jazz Combo features Florian Schantz, the 1-=year old founder of the Combo when he was nine years old, presenting the musical combo with his sister Margaret, his dad, Lowell, who also acts as master of ceremonies for the program, and friend Rup Chattopadhyay, a chemical engineer, math and science teacher in his spare time, as well as provider of both trombone and flute selections in this afternoon of entertainment.

Florian, is currently a full scholarship student at Kean University furthering his education in music, plays the trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn in the combo, while Margaret, who earned a degree in business from Seton Hall University and is close to her master’s degree, also plays the flugelhorn.

The senior Schantz provide guitar for the combo as well as stories among many of the songs presented during the concert, most written at the onset of World War I or before, and popular throughout the war as well as well as through the second World War and into the 1950s. Some of the George M. Cohen songs featured were stirring tributes to the military going off to war, including the ever popular “Over There.” Schantz also provides some fascinating trivia questions about World War I and speaks on the importance of preserving the history of music as well as national affairs and events.

The daily concert is offered at no charge and with no registration necessary. Visit or @MonCOLIbrary and see the Upcoming Events page for times of the daily program.
