Layton Even with great sorrow comes great joy and the ability to love more, understand more, and appreciate life more.

Colleen McGrath Layton is the widow of Les Layton, who died at their home in Florida last May 23, with his loving wife of more than 40 years at his side. In addition to their two children and four grand children who will always be a part of Colleen’s happiest memories with the entire family, both Les and Colleen are Highlands natives and know they have a community up north that will always remember him, whether it be for his Navy service, his volunteerism on the fire department or first aid, or simply the genial friendly guy he always was.

Les, of course was a Highlands clammer, a fisherman who carried on as the sixth generation of successful watermen in Highlands. He was also a great student of genealogy and loved tracing his family back the generations they have been in the Bayshore, leaving a mark no one can ever forget.
Colleen, as a labor of love, created her own heart project to honor her husband and knows herself how pleased he would be of it. This crafty, creative widow took a dozen of her late husband’s favorite t-shirts … you know, the ones that showed where he enjoyed so many happy days, and put them together in an outstanding quilt, one she can look back on at any time and immediately conjure up some musing, sensitive, loving stories of so many happy memories.

Not only that, Colleen created the quilt to include a fish and naturally the ocean, paying tribute to how he made his living, the Belford CoOp and how he provided such a great life for his family as well as how he so enjoyed his time on the sea.
Colleen said when she completed the quilt, she knows she can always wrap herself in his love.

What a wonderful tribute to a loving and wonderful friend, husband, father, grandfather, and  Highlands man who can never be forgotten.

He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong.Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of You; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by You, Most High, they will be crowned.Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Bodily Death, from whose embrace no living person can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing Your most holy will. The second death can do no harm to them.
