Prayers are coming from residents throughout the area for Father Jarlath Quinn, ,pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help-St Agnes parish after he announced in letter in the church bulletin last week the hospitalization and treatment he is receiving for blood cancer.
The pastor indicated in his letter he wanted the community to know about his recent and continuing hospitalization, both locally and in Manhattan in preparation for his continued treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York.
Father said “ I will be hospitalized for several weeks and after returning back home to the parish I will need a lengthy period of recuperation.”
He identified his disease as “multiple myeloma/cancer of the blood and said, “I am grateful to all who have pledged prayers and written me and given words of encouragement through this process.” He also included thanks to all who are regularly praying for him “ without my knowing.”
In his letter to parishioners in the bulletin, Father continued: “Being away from the parish a few days this past week, I saw upon my return how new flowers have bloomed and others have begun to wilt and the weeds seem to always flourish. As I get older, I reflect more on the passage of time and the beauty of creation and the great gift of life.”
Continuing his uplifting and thoughtful outlook on life, Father also noted “we never know how things will unfurl in our life and the crosses that we are given but as I say so often it is a privilege to share in Christ’s passion when we offer our sufferings and unite them to the cross of Christ. I am most grateful for the prayers and loving concern of our Bishop through whom I exercise my priestly ministry,” Father added, saying he also is inviting parishioners to welcome the visiting priest who will assist Father Thomas while he himself is in the hospital.
Still with his mind and efforts on continuing all the activities of the parish, Father Jarlath noted projects are progressing at different paces with new projects in the planning as well. He cited the excellence of the recent repaving of the parking lot at OLPH and added that more flower and shrubs will be planted at that location this season, inviting parishioners who would like to donate flowers, plants and shrubs from their own gardens to enable them to also grow in the church gardens. He also invited anyone who wants to assist in any way within the parish to contact the parish office and offer their assistance.
