Fear and Loathing at Henry Hudson 2

Fear Reviewing the Henry Hudson Climate & Culture survey done among faculty and staff at all three schools in the regional district last year, it does not appear to faculty members that much as been done to correct their morale, communication, trust and lack of support issues they raised last year.

Looking at how things have changed or in many cases, remained the same since the last Climate & Culture review, teachers are apparently still wondering about the departure of the principal of one of the elementary schools. Some faculty members have raised the question concerning the circumstances of the outgoing principal’s departure and wondering if there is any connection between that and the appointment, on a temporary basis, of the new principal, who is related through marriage to the superintendent.

Many staff members seem more than disturbed over the elementary school principal’s ‘temporary’ appointment and appear to challenge state ethics regulations that address a possible conflict of interest by the school superintendent in the employment.

Also leaving the district this year are the directors of curriculum and special services, as well as the school librarian and director of special services. The new position of a Supervisor of Curriculum has been created, along with other hirings along with significant salary increases among some staff.

Faculty members are also still irate over the treatment of a veteran teacher and his treatment after taking family leave to care for an ill child, a situation that led to the HHREA filing an unfair labor practice against the district. Their anger was heightened when the educator was barred from attending the commencement exercises simply to say goodbye and wish students success.

Looking back at last year’s survey, and hearing complaints since the start of this school year, it seems fear of retaliation or being targets for parents who ask questions is still a concern, as are concerns raised by staff member of anything from requesting assistance, to communicating with administrators in a meaningful way, rather than feeling ignored or intimidated.

Faculty member still feel the district needs to create a culture where all, parents, teachers, employees, and local residents, feel they are being heard and their opinions valued.
